Castell Rhaglan, Monmouthshire, September 2022 The mediaeval ruins of Raglan Castle (Castell Rhaglan) in Monmouthshire, South East Wales date from the 15th century. In its day, and prior to the 'modifications' made by Parliamentary forces during the English Civil War, Raglan was considered to be one of the finest castles in Britain. The Union Jack is flying at half mast following the death of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. Date: 6th September 2022.

Caerphilly Castle, or Castell Caerfili in Welsh, is situated in the centre of the County Borough of Caerphilly in South Wales. It dates from the 13th century when it was constructed by Gilbert de Clare as a means of conquering Glamorgan and is one of the earliest concentric castles in Britain. It is surrounded by defensive lakes which form the moat. This image was captured one afternoon in early March during a stormy period of weather.

Located at the entrance to Ciutadella on the West coast of Menorca, this tower was constructed at the end of 17th century to provide defence from attacks from the sea. Ciutadella was Menorca's original capital and the city oozes history. Menorca is one of the Spanish Balearic islands, and lies off the coast of Spain in the Western Mediterranean. Best viewed LARGER

The beauty of fairytale

The famous Welsh fairytale castle in a stained glass design.

The southern vizcacha is a species of vizcacha, a rodent found in Argentina, Bolivia, Chile and Peru. They’re similar to bunnies. They like inhabiting in wild rocky and low vegetation areas. Their colour, yellow or grey, serve as camouflage within the mountain’s holes. This rodent is threatened due to excessive hunting and destruction of their natural habitat. For this one, I used Faber-Castell’s Polychromos and Derwent’s Battery Eraser on Canson’s A4-sized white paper. It took five hours.

Bellver Castle (Catalan: Castell de Bellver) is a circular castle on a hill near Palma de Mallorca on the Island of Majorca, Balearic Islands, Spain. It was built in the 14th century for King James II of Aragon. It was used as a military prison during the 18th and 19th centuries. It was again used as a prison in the 1950s. Now it is one of the main tourist attractions of the island. The intellectual and writer Gaspar Melchor de Jovellanos was one of the most famous prisoners of the castle. The castle, located on the estuary of the River Tâf, was originally established in 1116. It was rebuilt as a Norman stronghold. There have been many alterations since then, including becoming a Tudor fortified manor house in the sixteenth century.
