Spring flowers are scattered through the fresh green grass in the churchyard at St Laurence church at Tidmarsh in Berkshire, England. This Grade 1 listed C12th church with its unusual wooden bell cote has a superbly decorated Norman doorway, a Norman font and C13th lancet windows. The box pews lead to an unusual polygonal apse. There are also traces of C13th wall paintings in two window recesses. Just beyond the church the River Pang flows on its way to join the Thames at Pangbourne.

Leeds By Night #1 - Parish Church

Looking upstream of the River Thames towards the market town of Abingdon in Oxfordshire. Overhead gulls are wheeling and crying whilst two ducks paddle by. In the background is the spire of St Helen's church which dates form the early 12th century. A landmark in the area, it inspired the artist JMW Turner, featuring in a painting titled 'Abingdon'. Although now in Oxfordshire, Abingdon was, until 1867, the county town of Berkshire before that status was transferred to Reading.

Looking across the Thames to Bisham in Berkshire, England. This view is from the towpath leading from Marlow to Henley-on-Thames. On the far bank is the parish church of All Saints at Bisham which dates from the 12th century. This stretch of the river is famous for its rowing clubs and rowers - particularly Sir Steve Redgrave. Near the church is the Bisham Abbey National Sports Centre.

The Saint Publius Parish Church, also known as the Floriana Parish Church is a Roman Catholic parish church in Floriana, Malta, dedicated to Saint Publius. It was constructed at several stages between the 18th and 20th centuries. St Publius is a founding Christian of Malta and is their first Saint. With St Paul they are the patron saints of Malta. The church and the surrounding streets are being prepared for the feast day of St Publius, an annual celebration. In the square are the entrances to ancient granaries (looking like bases to columns).Such granaries have been found throughout Malta.

The parish church of Holy Cross at Shipton on Cherwell in Oxfordshire, England. The present church was built in 1831 after the previous building had been demolished. However, there has been a church here since the C12th - and a Saxon font gives a hint to a longer history. Originally named Holy Cross, in the C18th it was changed to St Mary and then to St Jerome before reverting to its original name. St Michael and St Mary's Church, Melbourne is a parish church in the Church of England in Melbourne, Derbyshire, UK.

Early evening and the moon is rising over the town of Silloth on the north coast of Cumbria, here seen as a digital oil painting from my original photograph. Silloth began its life in the 1850s by Carlisle businessmen who needed to establish a railhead and port. The parish church, Christ Church, seen here, is built of granite shipped over from Ireland by those same businessmen. The town, on the shores of the Solway Firth, faces the Scottish coast of Galloway and is known for its fine sunsets, once captured by JMW Turner.

The Abbey Church of St Mary the Virgin at Tewkesbury in Gloucestershire. There had apparently been a place of worship here fron the C7th but it was a Norman, Robert FitzHarmon who founded this abbey. Building started in 1102 and it was consecrated in 1121, housing a community of Benedictine monks.After the Dissolution of the monasteries by Henry VIII it became the parish church. Avery Island's Jungle Gardens are planted with azaleas, Japanese camellias, hydrangeas, Louisiana irises, palms, papyrus sedges, bamboo, and wisteria. Four miles of gravel roads are lined with live oak trees and Spanish moss. There are also many walking paths. There are numerous American alligators, Louisiana black bears, and white-tailed deer also inhabit the island, in addition to coypu, North American river otters, muskrats, snakes, and other wild animals.

The church of St Botolph at Swyncombe in South Oxfordshire. This lovely old church in the Chiltern Hills lies about 4.5 miles from Wallingford and is fairly close to the B481 running between Nettlebed and Watlington. Seen here with a springtime carpet of primulas, the outside of the church is typically early Norman with a round apsidal end to the chancel. Inside it was restored in 1850. The image has been finished as a coloured pencil drawing.

A view form the bridge at Goring on Thames, Oxfordshire, England. The church of St Thomas of Canterbury, dating from the 1100s, lies behind the mill and the millpond which feeds back into the river. Goring, in South Oxfordshire is on the north bank of the Thames directly opposite the smaller village of Streatley on Thames in Berkshire on the south bank. Here the river flows through an opening between the Chiltern Hills in the north and the North Wessex Downs in the south, known as the Goring Gap.

The parish church of St Michael and All Angels at Blewbury, Oxfordshire. Blewbury is a picturesque village in the North Wessex Downs not far from Didcot. At its centre is the parish church surrounded by old brick built cottages and almshouses. The church dates from the 11th century with additions constructed later in medieval times. It is surrounded by its churchyard which is designated as a "living churchyard" containing a variety of flora and fauna.

Abandoned in 1750, the roofless ruin of the 16th century St Cuthbert’s Parish Church is at East Calder, West Lothian, Scotland. I posted a shot of this old church yesterday, but the shot was 4 years old. I took some new shots today, I hope you all like the new shot. The scene looking from the toll bridge over the River Thames to the church and houses clustered round the millpond at Whitchurch on Thames in Oxfordshire, England. Whitchurch is on the north bank of the river, opposite the village of Pangbourne in Berkshire on the south bank. The toll bridge connects the two. The church is the parish church of St Mary, originally medieval although it was extensively rebuilt in 1858 by the architect Henry Woodyer.

So runs the motto of the Ancient and Royal Burgh of Linlithgow, West Lothian, Scotland. St Michael is the patron saint of the town and, in the form of the ancient church of that name, he still stands guard above its inhabitants, both residents and strangers alike. Although it is undoubtedly of earlier origin the first mention of “the great church of Linlithgow” is in a charter of 1138 in which King David I gifted it “with all its chapels, lands and other rights” to the Cathedral of St Andrews. On 22nd May 1242, the Church of St Michael of Linlithgow was consecrated.

Allison Green is a small park in Strathaven (pronounced "Stray-ven"), South Lanarkshire, Scotland. The tower belongs to Strathaven East Parish Church located next to the Powmillon Burn. St Mary's, or Ratho Parish Church on the northern edge of the village of Ratho, near Edinburgh, Scotland. Parts of St Mary's can be dated as far back as the 1100s, and it has been steadily added to and expanded since: to the point where the later extensions almost completely hide the original church. St Margaret's in Burnham Norton (apparently meaning North Town) is one of the round towered churches typical of Norfolk. It is one of the six surviving medieval churches in the Burnham area, the round tower displaying much of its Norman origins. In the churchyard is buried Richard Woodget, master of the sailing clipper Cutty Sark which can be seen at Greenwich, London. Burnham Norton is not far from the market town of Burnham Market and is only a short distance - about half a mile - from the sea which played an important role in its life. Nikon D200 Nikkor 18-200
