The Salem Redbirds were a minor league baseball team based in Salem, Virginia. The city of Salem has hosted minor league baseball each summer since 1957. Prior to the 1980 season, the Salem team was called the Pirates, associated with the Pittsburgh Pirates. Then the team changed affiliation to the Padres and changed the name to the Redbirds. In 1984 the affiliation changed again to the Texas Rangers, but the team kept the Redbird name until 1986, when they changed to the Buccaneers.
