If you ask a well-informed fan of the blue oval about the fastest stock Mustang from the muscle car era, the majority will point to the 1968 Cobra Jet. This powerhouse was equipped with a modified version of the conventional 428-cid engine designed for larger vehicles, enhanced with bigger valve heads and an intake manifold borrowed from the race-inspired 427. Additionally, it featured ram-air induction and a hood scoop that channeled air directly into a 735-cfm four-barrel carburetor. While it easily produced 410 horsepower, the official factory rating was listed at 335 horsepower. This understatement was a strategic move aimed at appeasing insurance companies and deceiving drag racing rule-makers.
