In Irish folklore, a banshee is a female spirit whose mournful wail, shriek, or keen foretells the imminent death of a family member. Often depicted as a woman with long, flowing hair and wearing a gray or white cloak, her appearance can range from that of a beautiful young woman to a frightful old hag. Her cry, heard at night, is a death omen, but she does not cause the death itself.
