This scene in old Granada looking from the Plaza San Gregorio towards the Calle Calderería Nueva made a challenging subject for this watercolour. Beautiful, old buildings, with colourful Moroccan shops and tea rooms on the ground floor, rise up above the narrow, cobbled streets leading up here from the City centre. In this painting I have tried to capture the vibrant colour of the scene as well as the lovely architecture. I love painting the narrow, cobbled streets in old Granada. The Fountain Of The Poppy is located in one of the highest streets in Sacromonte, near the city walls and where many of the houses are cave dwellings.

This watercolor painting is from the garden of the Mezquita, in the Albaicin, Granada, Spain looking out to the Alhambra Palace and the mountains of the Sierra Nevada. I have focussed here on capturing the Alhambra with the snow capped peaks of the Sierra Nevada behind. The rooftops of the old houses of the Albaicin make an interesting foreground which blends with the theme and composition. The original panting is for sale for 220 Euros Enquiries: [email protected]

A small painting of my red hen in my orange grove in Andalucia, Spain. Despite its size a lot of work went into this painting because I used egg tempera paints on a wood board primed with universal gesso, a method of painting used by the first renaissance artists before the discovery of oil paints. I found this a slow process because, unlike watercolours, the paint has to be applied in layers. I sprayed the finished painting with a special fixative varnish.

An alley in the Albaicin, Granada. I have always been inspired to paint the old quarters of Granada, the Albaicin, Sacromonte and the Alhambra. Spring and Autumn are the best times to visit the city but, because of Covid and lockdowns we have been unable to go to Granada for two years until this month. This painting of one of the narrow, cobbled streets of the Albaicin looking across to the Alhambra is the first in a new series of watercolours I hope to paint of this beautiful city. There are many interesting old buildings and corners to paint in the pretty little village of La Barriada de Alcora above Canjayar in La Alpujarra Almeriense, Almeria, Andalucia. I particularly liked this old stable because of the friendly mare and to paint a horse in watercolour offered a different challenge. Studies of the well known flamenco dancer and my friend, Mayte Beltran from Almeria, Spain. This was a commission as I was asked by a collector to do a painting of a flamenco dancer wearing a black costume so the original is sold.

A complete change. I decided to paint a portrait of my dog, Daisy. I took some photos of her to capture the pose I wanted but it was so useful to have her around to call upon as a live model when I needed to refer to her. Daisy is a Ratonero Bodeguero Andaluz, Andalucian wine cellar ratter. In the 18th Century, when the taste for sherry reached Britain, British wine merchants brought over to southern Spain small white terriers, descendants of the English Fox Terrier, to keep down the rats in the vast bodegas in western Andalucia. These were mixed with similar local dogs to produce the Ratonero Bodeguero Andaluz which is now recognised as a native Spanish breed. The Bodeguero is a lot taller and more agile than the similar Jack Russell as...
