Description: Dutty Boukman, the first leader of the Haitan Revolution, was born in the Senegambia region of Africa, transported as a captive to Jamaica and then sold to a plantation owner in Haiti. Hi was literate and taught other enslaved Africans in Haiti to read. Dutty Boukman presided over the ceremony of Bois-Caïman which launched the uprising which then became the Haitian revolution.
