I’m from Trinidad & Tobago so when I think about independence, I think about slave rebellions, rough sea waters, angular structures trying to contain a transplanted people. But the fight applies to every country and every person that has ever sought to be recognised as independent. So whether it’s 4th of July, Bastille Day, or a first time mum ditching her mum’s parenting advice, we all pace the walls of the angular structures that hem us in and decide whether we’re happy with the space we’ve been given or if we need to blow the walls out, or make a small hole to slip through and escape. Whether it’s mental, emotional, political, physical… whatever or whomever we seek independence from, there is a fight.

This was a photo I took of an orchid that looked rather mundane. I decided to make it into what I thought it should be.

A real gem of the forest; the very pretty female Purple-throated mountaingem hummingbird at a feeder, Costa Rica. The female is less than 10cm long (tip of the beak to tip of the tail) and weighs only 4.8 g. Female Purple-throated Mountaingem Hummingbird, Lampornis calolaemus. This bird inhabits forested areas in hilly terrain, and is found at altitudes from 800 to 2,500 m. Photographed at La Savegre National Park, Costa Rica. Due to habitat degredation, people are encouraged to put out nectar feders for hummingbirds, particularly for those which migrate to and from South and Central America to the United Sates.
