One World Trade Center (aka One WTC or Freedom Tower) is the main building of the new World Trade Center complex in Lower Manhattan, New York City. The building is 1,776 feet tall and opened in late 2014. Description: Domino Sugar Refinery On the Mississippi River Louisiana by Debra Martz When seeing at a distance and even when nearing the refinery, I thought it was something of the past. And then the narrator aboard the Creole Queen Historic Cruise began to tell of its history. To my surprise it is still operational and has been operating on the banks of the Mississippi River since 1909, now producing 7 million pounds of sugar per day. This Louisiana refinery is one of the region’s largest employers, providing more than 400 direct jobs. Today, the Chalmette refinery is the largest cane sugar refinery in the western hemisphere. ©Debra Martz, All Rights Reserved
Description: Mambo's Restaurant and Rooftop Bar Bourbon Street by Debra Martz I enjoyed an early morning walk on Bourbon Street and other French Quarter Streets nearby while there were no crowds. While on this stroll, I took pictures of my favorite signs and several are places I actually went to later. AND, Mambo's served up some great gumbo and char-grilled oysters! YUM! Description: The Communications/Music Complex of Loyola University in New Orleans, Louisiana is located on the corner of St. Charles and Calhoun Streets. One of the interior features is the Louis J. Roussel Performance Hall located on the second floor. The 589-seat hall can handle a full spectrum of performances from the solo recitals to the full symphony orchestra concerts. Description: Jackson Brewery, a New Orleans landmark, was once the brewing and bottling house of Jax Beer from 1890 until 1974. The building was purchased, renovated and turned into a place to shop and/or grab a bite to eat while taking in the views of the Mississippi River. There is, also, a museum devoted to the brewery which is free and open to the public. Description: Golden-Mantled Ground Squirrel by Debra Martz The Golden-mantled ground squirrel is a small squirrel like a chipmunk, with grayish-brown fur and two white stripes edged with black stripes. With that said, the first time I saw one of these at Briyce Canyon, I thought it was a Chipmunk. When I started trying to find out which variety, I discovered it was a squirrel. Description: Giant Sunflower and Bear Welcome by Debra Martz While spending a week in La Veta, Colorado in late September, I passed this sunflower a number of times. I had never seen a sunflower taller than the roofline of a house! Finally, drove intentionally there to stop for a photo. And, of course, it is bear country so I included the bear welcome in the composition. Description: Rio Grande Gorge Bridge Near Taos New Mexico I've crossed this bridge many times over the years, both by vehicle and by foot. There area sidewalks on both sides of the bridge plus a few lookout points where it widens to allow one to stop and let others pass by safely. The bridge is located approximately 10 miles NW of Taos on hwy 64 offering scenic views across the 1280 feet span. The Rio Grande Gorge is approximately 600 feet deep in this area with the bridge 650' above the gorge. Description: Simple Elegance by Debra Martz Being near the water from just before dawn to 30 minutes after sunrise presented me with some of the most beautiful moments with the egrets I had ever seen. I watched as they skillfully hunted with new movements/techniques I had not witnessed until this particular morning. Those moves often showed me just how poised and graceful these Snowy Egrets can be! Description: Cafe Du Monde The Original Coffee Stand and Band by Debra Martz There are at a number of location in New Orleans and surrounding area. This might be the biggest of the toursit attractions though with it's location along the Mississippi River Walk and a view across the street to the landmark, Jackson Square. Description: Chickasaw Ballpark - Bricktown - O K C by Debra Martz At the hub of Bricktown in downtown Oklahoma City you'll find the Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark. It opened in 1998 and s the home of the Oklahoma City Dodgers, the Triple-A affiliate of the Los Angeles Dodgers Major League baseball team. And you should be able to catch a ballgame here as the OKC Dodgers team plays 70 home games, April through September. Description: The Big Fiddle Sydney Nova Scotia Canada by Debra Martz Information Plaque Read: "The World’s Largest Fiddle located on the Sydney waterfront next to the Joan Harriss Cruise Pavilion greets visitors as they arrive via cruise ship. The fiddle and bow reach a height of 60 feet!" Made of solid steel, the giant fiddle was dubbed FIDHEAL MHOR A’ CEILIDH or the “Big Fiddle of the Ceilidh”. Ceilidh is a Gaelic word which translates into "visit." The Big Fiddle, as many call it, was designed and constructed by Cyril Hearn in 2005. Description: Cimarron Heritage Center Museum Boise City Oklahoma by Debra Martz The museum starts in a Bruce Goff-designed house with some of the original furnishings and collections of the owners who donated the home. It continues through several other buildings very well organized with historical information of Cimarron County. I was amazed with the outstanding work of displays for the Santa Fe Trail, dinosaurs, military uniforms and the Dust Bowl era. On the grounds is a one-room schoolhouse, a Dust Bowl home, restored Santa Fe Depot, windmill, blacksmith shop and more. The Cimarron Heritage Center is also responsible for providing access to Autograph Rock, a historic Santa Fe Trail campground that features ruts and a cliff wall full of trave...
Description: Zion Riverwalk Hike by Debra Martz This hike is a two mile round trip that follows the river. Where this hike ends, the Narrows hike begins. If you are willing to get your feet wet...and often deeper...you can continue if the weather permits. We hiked to where the Narrows begins but only imagined what it would be like to continue. Description: Spirit Warriors Indian Memorial, Debra Martz Photography ........................................................... This bronze sculpture of three Native American Spirited Warriors riding off to battle was designed by Oglala artist Colleen Cutschall. It is a part of the circular Indian Memorial at Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument in Montana. Within the full circle are granite panels containing photographic images of and quotes from chiefs and warriors. In addition, each tribe worked to identify those who fought and those who died so their names could be listed. ........................................................... Description: The San Miguel Mission in Socorro New Mexico had fallen into such bad shape that it was closed in 2010. In November 2013, the Conrad Hilton Foundation awarded a $1.1 million grant. It is now restored, beautiful and an active Catholic Church. Missions were important parts of the trade routes traveled by Spanish and Indian alike. During the Spanish colonial period in New Mexico, El Camino Real de Tierra Adentro (Royal Road of the Interior), was the major trade route between Mexico City and Santa Fe in New Mexico. The Royal Road passed the village of the Pilabó, home to the Piro Indians which is near today's Socorro, NM. The Piro met Spanish settlers when Oñate's expedition stopped there, and later a Franciscan mission was started in ...

I traveled to Rugby, North Dakota, to visit the Geographical Center of North America monument and, of course, get the photo. Description: "Pink Glow of a Roseate Spoonbill" While exploring the boardwalks at South Padre Island, I watched this Roseate Spoonbill slowly wade through the shallow water, sending ripples across the surface with each step. Its bright red face shield always reminds me of candy corn, but another distinctive feature is its yellow legs and remarkably long toes, perfectly adapted for walking across marsh vegetation.
