Remembering the B. Altman Department Store. B. Altman and Company was a luxury department store and chain, founded in 1865 in New York City, New York, by Benjamin Altman. On March 12, 1985, Altman's Fifth Avenue building was designated a New York City landmark. The Manhattan B. Altman store featured in the storyline of the television series The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, in which the main character, Midge Maisel, takes a job on the shop floor. Exterior scenes were filmed at the store's former Fifth Avenue building.

Remembering the beloved Higbee's Department Store in Cleveland Ohio. We all called it Higbee's, but for years the name on all their advertising was The Higbee Company. This was their logo. It is also the department store featured in the movie A Christmas Story, where Ralphie Parker first sees the Red Rider BB Gun.

Remembering the beautiful I. Magnin Department Store. I. Magnin & Company was a San Francisco, California-based high fashion and specialty goods luxury department store. When designer Christian Dior visited SF, he toured the Union Square store and called it the "White Marble Palace". Over the course of its existence, I Magnin expanded across the West into Southern California and the adjoining states of Arizona, Oregon, and Washington. In the 1970s, under Federated Department Stores ownership, the chain entered the Chicago, Illinois, and Washington, DC, metropolitan areas. 

Joseph Horne Company (Horne's) Department Store, Pittsburgh Pennsylvania

Frugal's Department Store has been in business since 1939. "Now you're shopping with cents" has been their slogan since 1955 due the fact that all of their clothing - at the time - used to cost under $3.00. That, of course, is not the case now. Due to their lack of originality (as well as their recent label of having the highest prices in retail) Frugal's is facing foreclosure.

Remembering Gimbels Department Store. Founded in Indiana and then relocating to Milwaukee, Gimbels eventually opened stores in Philadelphia and New York. With its arrival in New York, Gimbels soon became the primary rival to the leading NY retailer, Macy's. Despite its limited presence, Gimbels was well-known nationwide.  Gimbels gained publicity from the 1947 film Miracle on 34th Street, the 1967 film Fitzwilly, and was frequently mentioned as a shopping destination of Lucy Ricardo and Ethel Mertz on the hit 1950s TV series I Love Lucy. And of course it is where Will Ferrell works in Elf.

Ames Department Stores Inc. was an American chain of discount stores based in Rocky Hill, Connecticut, United States. The company was founded in 1958 with a store in Southbridge, Massachusetts, and at its peak operated 700 stores in 20 states, including the Northeast, Upper South, Midwest, and the District of Columbia, making it the fourth-largest discount retailer in the country.

Remembering the Jordan Marsh Department Store. Jordan Marsh & Company was an American department store chain that was headquartered in Boston, Massachusetts and operated throughout New England. It was founded by Eben Dyer Jordan and Benjamin L. Marsh in 1841.  After World War II, the management of Jordan Marsh announced that it would build a new store in downtown Boston. It would take up a full city block. Covering an area larger than Harvard Stadium, it would have two stories under ground; another 14 would rise into the air. It would have all the latest technology, including air conditioning, automatic doorways, block-long show windows, and radiant-heated sidewalks. They advertised it as “New England’s Largest Store.”

Remembering the wonderful Shillito's Department Store in Cincinnati. One of the nation’s great flagship department stores.

Remembering the great Marshall Field’s Department Store. Marshall Field's was a department store in Chicago, Illinois, founded in the 19th century that grew to become a large chain before being acquired by Macy's, Inc in 2005. Marshall Field's great six-story merchandising emporium catered to urban women with leisure time. Rather than "buyer beware," Field's motto was "Give the lady what she wants." He had that motto displayed on a sign above his desk.

Remembering Ivey's Department Store. Charlotte, North Carolina. JB Ivey & Company (commonly known as Ivey’s) was the premier department store in the Carolinas for nearly a century.

Remembering the cool Horne’s Department Store. Joseph Horne Company was the first department store in Pittsburgh, founded in 1849 by Joseph Horne. Every year since 1953, when the 100-foot tall Christmas tree began to go up on the corner of the Horne’s Department store building at Penn Avenue and Stanwix Streets, Pittsburghers knew that Christmas would soon be here. The tree that wraps around the corner of the seven-story building has more than 2,500 lights and more than 2,000 ornaments. It is still a welcome harbinger of the holiday. Today, the building is known as Highmark Penn Avenue Place, and the tree has been officially dubbed as the “Unity Tree.” But most Pittsburghers still refer to it as the Horne’s Christmas Tree.

Remembering the classy Bullock’s Department Store. Bullock's was a chain of full-line department stores from 1907 through 1995, headquartered in Los Angeles, growing to operate across California, Arizona and Nevada. Bullock's also operated as many as seven more upscale Bullocks Wilshire specialty department stores stores across Southern California.

The Emporium was a department store chain headquartered in San Francisco, California, which operated for 100 years—from 1896 to 1996. The flagship location at 835 Market Street, between 4th and 5th Streets, was a destination for generations of northern California shoppers.

Remembering Stix, Baer & Fuller. Stix, Baer and Fuller was a department store chain in St. Louis, Missouri that operated from 1892 to 1984. For many years the company was known as the leading high-end fashion store in the St. Louis Metropolitan Area.

Garfinckel's was a prominent department store chain based in  Washington, D.C. that catered to a clientele of wealthy consumers. Garfinckel’s carved out a unique, high-end niche and held on to it for 85 years, cultivating generations of dedicated shoppers who depended on the store for the trendiest and classiest apparel. When Garfinckel's closed in 1990, it was a heart-wrenching experience for employees and customers alike. Its flagship store at 14th and F in the city's F Street shopping district is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. 

Remembering Hengerer's Department Store. The William Hengerer Company, known informally as Hengerer's, was a Buffalo, New York-based department store chain, with stores exclusively located in Western New York. William Hengerer started selling dry goods on Main Street in the 1870s, and by 1907, Hengerer's boasted of being the largest department store between New York City and Chicago. Hengerer’s is one of the memories that makes Buffalo Buffalo.

Remembering Sakowitz Bros. Department Store in Houston, Texas. Their downtown department store, doing business in Houston since 1911, defined luxury shopping in Houston. In 1951, the retailer erected a 254,000-square-foot temple to luxury shopping at 1111 Main Street — a confident response to the more middle-American Foley’s across the street, which had opened in 1947.

Halle's Department Store. Script logo. The official name was The Halle Bros. Co, but we all called it Halle's, The store was used as the location of the fictional department store, Winfred-Louder, in the television series, "The Drew Carey Show". Actress Halle Berry, a native of Cleveland, was named after the store. This and Higbee's were the beloved department stores in Cleveland Ohio in the 50's and 60's.

Remembering the much-loved Robertson’s Department Store in South Bend, Indiana. People who grew up in Northern Indiana and Southwestern Michigan have fond memories of Robertson’s. Robertson’s was the largest department store in South Bend at six stories plus basement which totaled nearly 185,000 square feet of retail space. This building featured a two-level menswear section, a mezzanine featuring a book store, bake shop and luncheonette as well as photo studio on the second level, a third floor dedicated to women's fashions, three floors comprised of housewares, electronics and major appliances, and a sixth floor tea room with auditorium which was used for fashion shows and product demonstrations. A sad time for all when it closed in 1986.
