According to church tradition, it was originally built in Romanesque style in 1015, although no archaeological remains exist. The parish church of St Lawrence at Hungerford in Berkshire, England. The church is just to the west of the town next to the swing bridge crossing the Kennet and Avon Canal. It was totally rebuilt in 1814 in the Regency Gothic Revival style using Bath Stone which was transported along the canal. Further refurbishment then took place in the mid 1800s. The canal itself was constructed between 1794 and 1810 to link the cities of Bristol and London, joining the Thames at Reading,

A canalside scene at Shipton-on-Cherwell in Oxfordshire, England. The Oxford canal here is overlooked by the parish church of Holy Cross. The church and village predate the canal by several centuries - the River Cherwell being the only waterway then! There has been a church here since the C12th but after a number of additions it was demolished in 1831 and the present Gothic Revival one built. Edmund was king of East Anglia during the 9th century, and put to death by the Vikings. His head was returned to his body by a faithful wolf, who protected his body until it could be buried. I took this picture of his statue outside the Cathedral at Bury St Edmunds. Saint Edmund is now the patron saint of wolves, pandemics, and victims of torture.
