The Ohio to Erie Trail is a 326 mile multi-use rail trail that runs from the Ohio River to Lake Erie. For hikers, bicyclers, skaters, horse-back riders and even cross-country skiers in winter.

The North Bend Rail Trail runs 72 miles in north-western West-Virginia. It is located in the Appalachians and is part of the cross-country American Discovery Trail. It is known for a 2,297-foot tunnel and “haunted” Silver Run Tunnel.

Railroads declined sharply in the late 1900s, leading to rail abandonment going from 800 miles per year before 1980 to over 4,000 miles per year subsequently. To alleviate the railway’s responsibilities for non-active lines, Congress amended the 1968 National Trails System Act, adding “railbanking” in 1983. Railbanking preserved the right-of-way and the infrastructure, while allowing them to be used for other uses, like rail trails. Rail trails involve pulling up track, and laying down gravel atop the former rail bed. This allows everyone from cross country skiers and horseback riders, to bicyclists and hikers to travel some of the most picturesque terrain around while navigating the relatively gentle grades common with rail corridors.

This 118 mile rail trail is the longest in the state of Kansas. The trail partially follows the Santa Fe National Historic Trail and passes through vast prairie, small towns, and leafy forests; all dotted with numerous historic trading posts and buildings.

The GAP Trail is a 185+ mile trail that originates in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and ends at the Canal Place in Maryland. The trail is mostly crushed limestone with a mild elevation grade. The route includes 3 tunnels, 2 viaducts and a bone cave.

The Greenbrier-River Rail-Trail in West Virginia replaced portions of the C&O train rail line. It runs 78 miles along the Greenbrier-River through scenic forested areas. It is a multi-use trail primarily designed for hikers and bicyclers.
