Formed as the Sacramento Buccaneers, the team's inclusion in the Pacific Division of the Continental Football League was announced in May 1967. The team played as the Capitols from 1968 to 1970.

The league typically played a summer schedule that ran from June to August. For one season, 1976, the loop was known as the “Western Football League” although all six members that season were still based in California.
Description: The Sacramento Spirits were a professional soccer team based in Sacramento, California and played in the American Soccer League (ASL) for two seasons. In the 1978 season the team lost its league membership for failing to fulfill the obligations of the ASL constitution. They were replaced by a new team named the Sacramento Gold and inherited the Spirits' 2–4–0 record, players, and remaining schedule. The Gold ceased operations in 1980 and was briefly replaced by another Sacramento team, the Spirit.
Description: The Sacramento Attack was an Arena Football League team that debuted in the league in 1992 and played a single season. The Attack were originally going to be named the L.A. Wings, but shortly before the 1992 season started L.A. was scrapped and the team was shipped to Sacramento. After one season the team was moved to Miami, Florida, to form the Miami Hooters. The franchise's AFL tenure ended in Sunrise, Florida, where the Florida Bobcats played from 1996 to 2001, folding after the latter year.
