The Denver Mavericks were a minor league professional ice hockey team in the International Hockey League during the first half of the 1959–1960 season. They played at the Denver Coliseum in Denver, Colorado. The Mavericks were an expansion team and recruited most of its players at colleges in Colorado. The IHL pulled the franchise from the original owners, Mile High Hockey Inc., and gave it to a Denver group headed by David M. Segal. The new ownership refinanced the team, but the changes did not solve the team's financial problems. On December 3, 1959, the team moved becoming the Minneapolis Millers. The Mavericks were in Denver for only 34 days, and finished their tenure in Denver with a 10–8 record.

The Indianapolis Racers were a major league hockey team in the World Hockey Association from 1974 to 1978. They competed in four full seasons before folding 25 games into the 1978–79 season. They played at Market Square Arena. They are often best known for being the first major league team to secure the services of Wayne Gretzky and Mark Messier.

The Hampton Aces were a low-level minor league hockey team in the Tidewater region of Virginia. The club started out as the Jersey Aces in Cherry Hill, New Jersey in the fall of 1978. The Aces played for the Northeastern Hockey League championship in the spring of 1979. They were defeated by the Erie Blades. Prior to the club’s second season, the Northeastern Hockey League re-branded itself as the Eastern Hockey League. The league struggled to stay afloat with just six members. The Aces also struggled, finishing in last place in 1980 and again in 1981. The Aces folded along with the rest of the EHL in the summer of 1981.

The Jackson Bandits were a minor league professional ice hockey team and member of the East Coast Hockey League (ECHL). The Bandits played at the Mississippi Coliseum in Jackson, Mississippi between 1999 and 2003. Previously the franchise played as the Chesapeake Icebreakers in Upper Marlboro, Maryland prior to their relocation following the 1998–99 season.The Bandits ceased operations in 2003 after the ECHL denied the team's request to suspend operations for a year.

The Spokane Flyers were a ice hockey team from Spokane, Washington. They played in the Western International Hockey League (WIHL) from 1948-49 to the 1979-80 season. The Flyers were the 1949-50 National Senior Champions. They also twice won the Allan Cup in 1976 and 1980.

The Virginia Lancers were a minor league hockey team that played in several leagues from 1983 until 1990. Their home ice was the Vinton Sports Complex. The Virginia were founded as the result of the Nashville South Stars relocating in December 1983, halfway into the 1982–83 season of the ACHL. They would continue to play in the ACHL from 1983 until 1987. Prior to the 1990–1991 season, the name was changed to the Roanoke Valley Rebels.

The Cubs started play as an expansion franchise in the Eastern Hockey League in 1972. They were an affiliate of the National Hockey League's Boston Bruins.

The Anchorage Aces were a semi-professional hockey team in the Pacific Southwest Hockey League (PSHL) starting in 1989 and became a charter member of the professional West Coast Hockey League (WCHL) in 1995. When the WCHL was absorbed by the East Coast Hockey League in 2003, the team joined the merged ECHL and became the Alaska Aces. In June 2017, the Aces' ECHL membership was sold and relocated to Portland, Maine, for the 2018–19 ECHL season.

The Whalers moved to Hartford in 1974 and joined the NHL in the NHL–WHA merger of 1979. In 1997, the Whalers franchise relocated to North Carolina, where they became the Carolina Hurricanes.
