Original illustration from my Daily Orange series. The Golden Lion Tamarin, a magnificent creature which displays an impressive orange mane. It resides in Brazil, which like many animals, has suffered from deforestation, leaving it with only 2-5% of its natural habitat. It also has less decent hiding spots, making it easier prey. In the 1970s there was only around 500 left in the wild. Luckily there are now around 5000, although they are still an endangered species. The animal is visually stunning but also has impressive social structures. It also has claws which enable dexterity and foraging abilities.

I captured this photograph of a Golden Lion Tamarin whilst on holiday to Tenerife we visited Loro Parque the Animal Embassy. I love his little face and eyes surrounded by that bright orange fur.

The emperor tamarin is a species of tamarin allegedly named for its resemblance to the German emperor Wilhelm II.

Cotton-top tamarins are a critically endangered small monkey that are found in the tropical forests of north west Colombia where they are an important seed disperser. Habitat loss and the illegal pet trade have been factors in the decline of this species. Prior to the ban on international trade of tamarins in 1976, tens of thousands of them were exported for biomedical research. These highly social monkeys live in small familial groups in trees with foliage cover. They spend the day foraging, resting, travelling, and grooming, always on the lookout for potential predators.
