Description

The Guadalcanal Campaign, also known as the Battle of Guadalcanal and codenamed Operation Watchtower was a military campaign fought between 7 August 1942 and 9 February 1943 on and around the island of Guadalcanal in the Pacific theater of World War II. It was the first major offensive by Allied forces against the Empire of Japan. On 7 August 1942, Allied forces, predominantly United States Marines, landed on Guadalcanal, Tulagi, and Florida in the southern Solomon Islands, with the objective of denying their use by the Japanese to threaten Allied supply and communication routes between the US, Australia, and New Zealand. The Allies also intended to use Guadalcanal and Tulagi as bases to support a campaign to eventually capture or neutralize the major Japanese base at Rabaul on New Britain. The Allies overwhelmed the outnumbered Japanese defenders, who had occupied the islands since May 1942, and captured Tulagi and Florida, as well as an airfield (later named Henderson Field) that was under construction on Guadalcanal. Powerful American and Australian naval forces supported the landings.

A Hospital Corpsman (HM) /ˈkɔərmən/ was an enlisted medical specialist of the United States Navy who may also serve in a United States Marine Corps unit. The hospital corpsman works in a wide variety of capacities and locations, including shore establishments such as naval hospitals and clinics, aboard ships, and as the primary medical caregivers for sailors while underway. Hospital corpsmen are frequently the only medical care-giver available in many fleet or Marine units on extended deployment. In addition, hospital corpsmen perform duties as assistants in the prevention and treatment of disease and injury and assist health care professionals in providing medical care to sailors and their families.

Description

The Combat Action Ribbon (CAR), is a United States Navy, United States Marine Corps and United States Coast Guard military decoration. The Navy CAR was authorized on 17 February 1969 and may be awarded to members of the Navy and Marine Corps in the grade of USN/USCG captain and below and USMC colonel and below, "...who have actively participated in ground or surface combat." Air combat does not meet the criteria for the CAR, with Naval Aviators, Naval Flight Officers and enlisted Naval Aircrewman typically being recognized for combat via the Air Medal, although this decoration requires far more combat exposure over a prolonged period versus the single exposure criteria of the CAR.
