The symbol is attested in the Huld Manuscript, collected in Iceland by Geir Vigfusson in 1880 (but consisting of material of earlier origin). The symbol was frequently inscribed on seagoing vessels to insure their safe return home. It has also long played an important role among people who believe in magic powers, such as Norse Shamans. As a spiritual compass, this magical device guides your heart and steps to make the right choices in life. A highly recognizable Nordic symbol, this is the Icelandic magical stave called the vegvisir. According to the text from which this symbol comes it is meant to guide anyone who carries this symbol through storms or other bad weather. I have recreated this symbol in my own style from the Huld manuscript as a hand-carved blockprint which I printed before scanning.

Also known as the runic compass, or the Viking compass, the Vegvisir made of eight Viking rune staves, is renowned as a symbol of guidance and protection by Vikings. Vegvisir itself means 'wayfinder' and 'sign post' in Icelandic language.

As one of the lesser-known Viking symbols, the Web of Wyrd is a symbol in Norse mythology that represents the interconnectedness of past, present and future. According to the myth, the Web of Wyrd was woven by the Norns/Nornir, the Shapers of Destiny in Norse mythology. The symbol comprised of nine staves contains all the runes thus symbolizing all ‘the possibilities’ the past, present and future brought and might bring. It is also called ‘Skuld’s net’ as Skuld was believed to be one of the Norns that wove the web.

The Helm of Awe - also Aegishjalmur, the Icelandic Magical Sun - is one of the most mysterious and powerful symbols of northern mythology. Vegvísir, theViking Compass. It is an eight-pointed shape, with each point having a unique design. It is one of many Icelandic magical staves, or galdrastafir, which were supposedly used to channel magic in specific ways. There were sigils for protection, strength, guidance and assistance with specific tasks or areas of life.
