Description: The John E. Amos Power Plant is a large coal-fired generating station located along the Kanawha River near Winfield, West Virginia. Named for West Virginia businessman and politician John E. Amos, the plant began operating in 1971 and consists of three generating units with a combined capacity of roughly 2,900 megawatts, making it one of the largest power plants in the Appalachian region. Operated by Appalachian Power, a subsidiary of American Electric Power, the sprawling facility is especially recognizable for its massive natural-draft cooling towers, towering smokestacks, coal-handling equipment, and riverfront location, where coal has historically arrived by both rail and barge. For decades.
