The Church of the Good Shepherd is one of the most, if not the most, photographed buildings in New Zealand. Located at the south end of Lake Tekapo, in the South Island, it attracts tens of thousands of visitors per year. And therein lies one of its problems. It is so widely known that an original image is almost out of the question. Add to that the vagaries of New Zealand weather, and trying to get a photo without hordes of people, makes it something of a challenge. Fortunately, our stay at Tekapo was about two minutes walking distance from the church, so it was easy for me to get there early, before it was inundated with tourist buses. Even so, there were already a good number of "serious" photographers there before 8 am. All arm...

How amazing is this?! I'd hoped for auroras to appear during our time in Tekapo, since it's known as having one of the darkest skies in the world. We were lucky enough to have it two nights running (although we could only see it with the naked eye on one of those nights). I should have known the minute I got to the Church of the Good Shepherd that they could be seen with the camera, since there was a horde of photographers all facing south, which is probably not a normal occurrence at 11pm!

What good luck is this?! Of our three nights in Lake Tekapo, we were treated to pink southern skies for two of them. The aurora may not have been visibly dancing, but it was most definitely there!
