Nanny was a leader of the Maroons (formerly enslaved Africans who escaped captivity) at the beginning of the 18th century. Nanny was born in Ghana and is said to have been from the Ashanti region which is known for it’s strong matriarchal tradition and courageous female warriors and leaders. She was captured and enslaved in Jamaica but escaped and fled to the hills of the island from where she fought for the freedom of other enslaved Africans. She was acknowledged by both the Maroons and British settlers as an outstanding leader who became in her lifetime up to the current time, a symbol of unity and strength for her people.
