1979 Pins and Buttons

Named after the 1968 British horror film of the same name, Witchfinder General was a heavy metal band formed in Stourbridge, England in 1979. They were part of the new wave of British heavy metal (NWOBHM) scene and have been cited as a major influence on the doom metal genre. Witchfinder General disbanded sometime in 1984 after two albums and three singles were released, amidst controversy of their sexually explicit album covers in the UK. The band's importance was acknowledged after they disbanded, though they did come back together for a third and final full-length album, Resurrected, in 2008.

The Saint Marks Baths opened at 6 St. Marks Place in the East Village of Manhattan in New York City in 1913. Through the 1950s, it operated as a Turkish bath catering primarily to Russian-Jewish immigrants on New York's Lower East Side. In the 1950s, it began to have a homosexual clientele at night and by the 1960s, it had become an exclusively gay bathhouse. In 1979, the bathhouse was refurbished, and the name was changed to New Saint Marks Baths, though it continued to be known simply as Saint Marks Baths. In 1981, the neighboring building was purchased, with plans to expand. The AIDS epidemic caused some activists such as Larry Kramer to urge its closing, and St. Mark's Baths would be shuttered on December 7, 1985.

Alien is a 1979 science fiction horror film directed by Ridley Scott and written by Dan O'Bannon. Based on a story by O'Bannon and Ronald Shusett, it follows the crew of the commercial space tug Nostromo, who, after coming across a mysterious derelict spaceship on an uncharted planetoid, find themselves up against an aggressive and deadly extraterrestrial set loose on the Nostromo.

Throughout the '70s, the 6.6-liter Pontiac Trans Am had been the lone heavyweight, dishing out big-displacement knockouts as all other contenders retired, but sadly, the Pontiac 400 would not be making the trip into the '80s as the auto industry scrambled to meet new corporate fuel average standards of 20 mpg by 1980. Before the party ended, Pontiac served up one last round of the top-shelf stuff and called it "The 10th Anniversary Limited Edition." Along with its special paint treatment, graphics, wheels, and more, this would be among the last of the Trans Ams offered with the "T/A 6.6" 400 engine. As a collectible car from the '70s, the anniversary Trans Am stands out in terms of desirability and value.

The Alabama Vulcans were a professional football team which were a part of the American Football Association in 1979. Though the Vulcans used a different color scheme than its predecessors did in the World Football League, the team's name was borrowed from the WFL's Birmingham Vulcans, and its logo was an amalgamation of those of the Vulcans and the Birmingham Americans to draw on the popularity of the previous league's teams. During the one season of the team's existence, it had a record of 13–6, with two five-game winning streaks. The team made the playoffs, but lost in the first round. Debt caused demise.

Grim Reaper was a heavy metal band formed in Droitwich, England in 1979. They were discovered after winning a Battle of the Bands contest with over 100 acts, and eventually signed to Ebony Records, with a track on the Ebony compilation, “Heavy Metal Heroes.” Their debut album “See You in Hell” was released in '83 on Ebony and was well received.
