The '80s were a great time for over the top custom four-wheel drive vehicles and while there were plenty of shops in the greater SoCal area to get your ride tricked out, there were none greater than El Centro's Ultimate Off Road. While other guys were just adding lift kits and chrome bits, UOR was building rigs that actually performed off road as well as they looked, so if you were rolling in a UOR build, you were doing so with confidence as they were as bulletproof as they come.

The 720 pickup was Datsun's first foray into the 4-wheel drive mini-truck market in both long bed and extra-cab variants. It was introduced as a 1980 model and continued until 1986 when the Hardbody style (model D-21) was introduced as a 1986.5 model. Prior models of Datsun mini-trucks were the 521 and 620 which did not offer a 4-wheel drive option. The 720 featured an independent front suspension with torsion bar springs, a leaf spring live axle rear suspension, and a 4 cylinder engine displacing 2.0 liters at introduction, later enlarged to 2.4 liters. The manual transmission on the 720 drove a divorced transfer case that required extra clearance over a married setup. This resulted in the 720 4x4 models having a lifted look.

Con-Ferr was founded in 1961 by Pete Condos & Frank Ferro (hence the Con-Ferr name), though eventually Pete bought out Frank to become sole owner and maintained the name for the life of the company. Con-Ferr billed itself as America’s largest off-road parts and accessories provider and with their 44,000 square feet Burbank, California facility, I'm inclined to believe the claim. Recreational off-roading was a fairly new endeavor in the '60s and thanks to Pete Condos, countless Americans were able to outfit their 4WD rigs and dune buggies to get them out on the trails. From roof racks and roll cages, to wide wheels and engine adapters, Con-Ferr carried it all and did so for decades, leaving an indelible mark on the industry.

5 things I like almost as much as driving my Series, the perfect design for any Land Rover enthusiast. Just don't do the last one before driving (or whilst!)
