'Altona' is an oil painting of a view from the 135 year old pier of Altona, a seaside suburb of Melbourne. The weathered pier is currently being replaced because it was unfortunately failing structurally. The light weathered wood is a beautiful contrast to the emerald green sea.

I took the reference photo for 'Love to be fishing' on the Altona Jetty, Melbourne. The jetty was built in the 1800s and unfortunately needs to be replaced because of its deterioration and public safety concerns. I think the weathered structure is a piece of art and contrasts well with the green waters below. I often think I would love to be fishing when walking on a jetty and wonder if there are many fish under the surface and if they are biting. It is mesmerising and calming to look at the water, watching shapes, ripples and patterns created .

This is a little pen and watercolour sketch of our local beach done from a photo I took myself. I really like this little painting, especially inside it's simple raw timber frame. Planning to more like this type of painting of our local area. SOLD 20 cm x 15 cm

Yesterday morning I joined Gwen's class for painting "en plein air" as the French say. There is nothing like this experience. This is only the third time I've actually painted in the open air, just to explain why this looks more amateur than some of my other work. In spite of it's flaws, I was still happy with this spontaneous sketch. I used pen and watercolour wash, and I think I like that combination and plan to use it more often. Update (March 20th, 2011): I entered this in the Qenos art show, which is an annual competition held by Hobson's Bay Arts Society. It won 1st prize in watercolour, and also sold. Well, goes to show you, that a little painting, done in just a short time can still kick ass, lol. :)

This was inspired by our local beach, which attracts kite surfers from all over. Dog walkers and people watching the kite surfers is also a typical scene. This won me a special merit award in a local show.
