During his five years in Prison, Toller started writing theater plays and became a highly recognized expressionist playwright. Some of his titles are Transformation and Hoppla - We are Alive. During his five years in Prison, Toller started writing theater plays and became a highly recognized expressionist playwright. Some of his titles are Transformation and Hoppla - We are Alive. He gave all of his money to refugees of the Spanish Civil War. In 1939, Toller killed himself in his hotel room in New York. W. H. Auden dedicated to him a poem, “In Memory of Ernst Toller.”
