Chinese Folklore Pins and Buttons

In their duties as guardians of Diyu, the realm of the dead, Ox-Head and Horse-Face's role is to capture human souls who have reached the end of their earthly existence and bring them before the courts of Hell. Souls are then rewarded or punished based on the actions performed in their lifetime.

This ancient Chinese mythology design features the Chinese folklore monkey king Sun Wukong.

Ancient Chinese Dragon....baby.

Inspired by "the cow jumped over the moon", from Mother Goose's "Hey Diddle Diddle", with the Chinese mythology of Chang'E, the moon goddess, who lives on the moon with the Jade Rabbit. This design was created in 2021, updated Sept 2022, as inspired by the year of the Ox.

Zhong Kui regarded as a vanquisher of ghosts and evil beings. Zhong Kui is able to command 80,000 demons to do his bidding and is often associated with the five bats of fortune.

The last two illustrations in this series (grape and pomegranate) were very ancient-greeky so I wanted to do something more international and with more pop-culture associations, so I picked: Orange! In the far east, the orange is a symbol of the sun. They are a symbol of good luck and fertility. The orange is rare among trees for its ability to have both flowers and fruit on a branch at once, leading to associations with both virginity and fertility combined; to this end, it is a traditional symbol of brides in China. I chose a qipao dress for this orangey bride, though I did add a big slit up the side so she could get her leg out for more tattoos. There’s so many orange references in this pic, I thought I’d just straight up ...

A long standing character of mine gets the tee-shirt debut. Feng-du, the shinigami that locks away troublesome or evil souls in the orbs on his necklace for safe travels to the underworld.

The dragon and phoenix are important supernatural creatures in Chinese mythology, symbolizing yang and yin, man and woman, emperor and empress, etc... They are very auspicious symbols of success, harmony and happiness, particularly in marriage.

A hexagram is a figure composed of six stacked horizontal lines (爻 yáo), where each line is either Yang (an unbroken, or solid line), or Yin (broken, an open line with a gap in the center). There are 64 hexagrams in all, each representing an archetypal situation in life. Kirin or Quilin refers to one of the mythical creatures from Japan. It is often translated as unicorn, but it is a mixture of deer, ox, lion and dragon. This drawing of Yokai figure Kirin is perfectly suitable for friends of Japanese culture and lovers of mythical creatures.
