Ocean inhabitants

Anthozoa is a class within the phylum Cnidaria that contains the sea anemones and corals. More than 6,100 species have been described. The name comes from the Greek words άνθος [anthos] (meaning flower) and ζώα [zoa] (meaning animals), hence anthozoa = "flower animals", a reference to the floral appearance of their perennial polyp stage. Like those of other cnidarians, the individual polyps have a cylindrical body crowned by a ring of tentacles surrounding the mouth. All cnidarian species can feed by catching prey with stinging nematocysts; sea anemones are capable of catching fish and gorgonian corals of catching plankton.

The venus flytrap sea anemone is a deep sea animal in the phyla Cnidaria, with jellyfish and coral. A filter feeder, it uses its tentacles to capture small particles floating in the ocean. Unlike many sea anemones, it uses a stalk to lift it up into the ocean current so it can collect more food.

They can reach over 2 metres across with tentacles of around 30 metres long, containing millions of nematocysts (stinging cells). The ellepis is not one organism but an association of many individuals, a photosynthetic alga and multiple specialised polyps. Each ‘organ’ is a seperate individual in the colony, but only the reproductive individuals reproduce sexually, producing all the other polyp types. They are hemaphroditic, and self fertilise to produce new polyps to extend the current colony. Their tentacles are covered in nematocysts, some adapted to stun, others to hold the prey. They can’t control where they drift but they float high enough that they rarely crash into anything. the algae is red due to the high anthocyanin concentration there to protect it from being damaged by the high light intensity.
