I’ve been wanting to repaint this idea for a long time. The original, “Hail to the Thief (Oombrella)” was an important shift in my style back in 2006. I wanted another go at it but there’s something to it’s bold simplicity that I think really serves it. Then it hit me last week! “Why not paint it with a palette knife and a spoon!” So I quickly got to work. Palette knives and spoons can be a lot of fun but they can also be super frustrating. It’s a good exercise and I think if I repaint any old ideas (especially ones where I don’t have good images taken) I’ll go this route to give them their own unique texture. #artJWB

This particular piece was very cathartic when I pieced it together. It was after a long run of pet portraits and political paintings so it was nice to kind of just let the creative process take over. It’s basically a few of my favorite things thrown together. 70s fashion photography, penwork, big red circle ?, decoupage, and a Dilophosaurus. I drew the Dino in a style that I really enjoy which is looking at a source image but not looking down at the canvas. Just trusting your hand to go where it goes. After that the tail and the rest of the painting was just a painterly dream. It was initially going to be called “FIERCE” but I liked the tag “my soulmate 93’. The foundations of this painting was forged in the remnants of a typhoon that smacked Seattle on Oct. 16th, 2016. I went into the flooding backyard as the storm raged and smacked my canvas into the rainwater. This punctured the canvas slightly but I feel it only adds to the nature of the piece itself. I then rushed the soaked canvas to my work table downstairs to squirt paint and swirl it into the rainwater. Then the basement started to flood. I left the canvas to sit and dry with the emotional swirls I had dragged into it. By the next day the urge to create this piece left with the storm. I had this unfinished piece with me these past few years. I knew I wanted to finish it but I wasn't absolutely sure how. Then I realized I wa...

My first painting in Hangzhou, China. This is a painting that popped into my head when I saw an older woman riding her bike down the street and carrying an absurd load of nonsense on the back of the bike. I immediately wondered what sort of things had happened to her over her life and how much pressure she may or may not have dealt with during that time just trying to live day to day. I don't know, maybe she absolutely loves what she does, but to me she seemed to be worn down and just beaten. It was sad. #artJWB
