The sandy bed of the dry Tsauchab River which flows between the dunes of the Namib Desert at the Namib Naukluft National Park, at Sussovlei, Namibia, Africa. In the past the river deposited the sands which now make up the Namib desert, carrying them from the inland to the coast.

To walk in the Lake District National Park, in the UK, you will encounter the stiles that prevent the sheep that live on the mountains from wandering too far. They vary in style but they are stiles nevertheless. This one resides near Blea Tarn, a most picture-perfect place. As I recall, the British Standards Institute has a standard for stiles. It doesn't define what they must look like but only their functional purpose.
