We visited Florence during the spring and stayed right by the Duomo. Every time we passed it, whether it was morning, afternoon, or evening, it changed and we were enchanted.

Ghosts of Duomo Milan Italy

Florence's Duomo is the city's most iconic landmark. Capped by Filippo Brunelleschi's red-tiled cupola, it's a staggering construction whose breathtaking pink, white and green marble facade and graceful campanile (bell tower) dominate the medieval cityscape. Sienese architect Arnolfo di Cambio began work on it in 1296, but construction took almost 150 years and it wasn't consecrated until 1436. I took this photo on a visit there and gave it a painterly treatment in CC and Topaz.

I've been to Florence a few times now and am always impressed with the Duomo. The incredible white marble facades and the intricate patterning in various other shades of marble. And all topped off with the lovely terracotta dome

The great Baroque facade, in yellow tufa-stone, is surmounted by a massive campanile with finely shaped decorative elements. The portal on the right side is from the 16th century, while the other is from the original 14th century edifice. The interior has a nave with two aisles separated by massive Corinthian columns, and three apses. The stucco decoration is from the 16th and 17th centuries. The huge Duomo located in the Piazza dei Maracoli (Square of Miracles) in Pisa, Tuscany, Italy. The Duomo is 100 yards long, with a massive nave, flanked by two aisles and 68 monolithic columns, in the Romanesque style. The pulpit, considered by many as the most beautiful in Italy, was carved by Giovanni Pisano, who also did much of the carving in the baptistry. The beautiful Duomo in Florence, Italy is a treat for the eyes

The three magnificent buildings in the Piazza del Duomo in Florence, Italy. On the left, the Battistero di San Giovanni (Baptistery of St. John) - begun in 1296 and completed in 1436. On the right, the Campanile di Giotto (Giotto’s Bell Tower) - begun in 1334 and completed in 1359. In the centre, the cathedral church, the Basilica di Santa Maria del Fiore (Duomo) - begun in 1059 and completed in 1128. The exterior walls of all three buildings are faced in alternate vertical and horizontal bands of polychrome marble from Carrara (white), Prato (green), Siena (red), Lavenza and a few other places.

The Duomo di Siena in Italy is spectacular and don't miss to see it when you are there. Construction on the cathedral began in 1196 and was completed in 1348. Since then it has be used as a Roman Catholic Marian Church and houses many important paintings and sculptures. Milan Cathedral (Duomo di Milano) is the cathedral church of Milan, Italy. The cathedral took nearly six centuries to complete: construction began in 1386, and the final details were completed in 1965. It is the largest church in the Italian Republic and the third largest in the world. The cathedral's impressive design features intricate spires, statues, and beautiful stained glass windows. I spent two lovely years living in Florence, Italy, and I miss it so much. This design represents a beautiful piece of Italian architecture. Thankfully Brunelleschi lost the baptistry door competition; because of that he went to Rome, discovered linear perspective and the pantheon. Then he came back to Florence and presented his secretive plan to the Medici about how to build the duomo. He kept it a secret and to this day it's a mystery exactly how he pulled it off.

I spent two lovely years living in Florence, Italy, and I miss it so much. This design represents five major beautiful pieces of Italian architecture. The amazing buildings of Florence.
