A short time later in July 1996 the hospital closed and was left abandoned and unmaintained for over two decades. Nefarious rumours began to spread about the hospital’s closure and ghost hunters and urban explorers began flocking to the spooky site in droves. Gonjiam Psychiatric Hospital quickly gained a reputation as one of the top three haunted buildings in South Korea.
