Graphic Portrait Pins and Buttons
Description: If a cat was an artist, here is the framed self portrait the cute cat would have painted, before adding color. A cute minimal line drawing in white of oval shaped cat with chunky whiskers and stumpy legs. To remind you how the cute kitty sounds she has added the word meow below. This design looks great on classic black and other strong colors. If she could use a camera, this could have been a selfie.
Description: Akira Kurosawa, a pioneer of cinematic storytelling, shaped film language with masterpieces like Seven Samurai and Rashomon. This stencil-style design captures his visionary style, featuring his silhouette with a film camera and shadowy riders from Seven Samurai in the background. The minimalist composition reflects Kurosawa’s timeless direction and poetic approach, appealing to fans of classic Japanese cinema, auteur filmmaking, and film history enthusiasts.
Description: The Muses: Pop as an invitation to contemplation In my ‘Muses’ series, I portray the nine emblematic inspirations of Love (Billie Holiday), the Epic (Bruce Lee), History (Homer), Music (Louis Armstrong), Tragedy (Kurt Vonnegut), Spirituality (Maya Angelou), Humor (Mark Twain), Dance (Martha Graham) and Cosmology (William Blake). I’ve depicted my subjects on rag paper with watercolor and wax crayons while obscuring their faces behind nonsensical graphic texts meant to somewhat frustrate the viewer, obstructing personal connection to the likeness. To me, this illustrates the energetic dilemma of meaningful creative communication amidst the quicksand of mass media consumption and instant gratification. http://www.karlfrey.com
