A Welcome Change Today, the last day of August, I went to Clingendael with my dear friend Michelle. It’s a welcome change from drawing art deco models, such as the last one. We were out there to take some landscape pictures and to do some drawing. Quite nice weather I must say. It’s still summer, no wind and plenty of sun although not as hot as last week. Perfect for outdoor sketching. However, when I arrived at the estate I realized I forgot my camping chairs. Those are unconfortable to transport by bike anyway. Return to the Spot The second one of Estate ‘Oosterbeek’ this week. Yesterday’s was my graphite pencil drawing ‘Oosterbeek – 07-04-20’. I quite liked it and so I returned today, trying to shake off this corona blues. This time I chose a specific spot in the park where there is a bend in a brook running through it. I found the reflections of the tree just enough to give my drawing something extra. It gave me some rectangulars counterbalancing all things organic. They also avoid the scenery for becoming to clotted with medium toned subtle branches, leafs and grasses. This I always find very troublesome to deal with. In fact Spring can be a tedious season. Sans titre - 25-01-15 Simone Signoret Part of the Sans titre series, being Simone Signoret, French actress and celebrity, active in the 1950s, 1960s, 1970s and 1980s. It was time that I should give her credit by making a great clairobscur drawing of her, reflecting somehow the epoque of film noir. I found a beautiful picture of her in her younger days and I saw some great diagonals providing me something to hold on whilst experimenting with her portrait in a cubistic way. Forest of the Stars My graphite pencil drawings Het Sterrenbos – 12-09-22 and Clingendael – 31-08-22 belong together. The latter is made on that very day, the first completed today. In the art statement to the Clingendael drawing I mentioned my friend Michelle. We agreed to do some live drawing there. However, she also wanted me to show a spot in Het Sterrenbos (Forest of the Stars) most dear to her. It’s a special section in the estate, consisting of man-sized hedges of rhododendrons. The famous Japanese garden is there and the forest itself is traversed by a star-shape pattern of paths. Hence the name Sterrenbos (radiant star patterns). Doesn’t Play Well With Others

Embracing Trees This graphite pencil drawing Park Hoog Oostduin – 14-09-22 follows directly after Het Sterrenbos – 12-09-22. Suddenly I found myself embracing the love for drawing trees again. Must be Autumn approacing. Throughout the years I see patterns in my sketching activities. Spring and Autumn by far are the most present in my art works. Some in Summer but the heat can be not pleasant to work in. I also get used to leaves on trees quite quickly. Only to forget how beautiful they are quite rapidly when November arrives. Then they start falling off trees and I often realize I did too few sketching outdoors. Repentance comes after the sin and 4 drooly months will follow until Spring arrives. A Portrait of Geesje A day ago I experimented with Art Graf. I was quite surprized and therefor I thought it would be nice to do a portrait of Geesje Kwak. There are only some odd 15 pictures of her taken by Breitner. Well, there could be more lingering about in archives. There were only a couple of them that were not related to his kimono series and one of them was ‘en profile’. Quite grainly and damaged but still usable, I guess. I must say, I just love those updo hair styles because they come in angles. That automatically opens a door to cubism, my favourite realm to dwell in. This is the first art statement on a drawing I wrote before completing it. It is time to express my dissatisfaction with today’s modern art. Having visited galleries and museums from early childhood on and seeing it all, I also am a son of a carpenter and skills and crafts were and still are very important in my family. It is from this perspective that I always have seen and valued art all around me. I strongly believe in the ethymological sense of the word ‘art’, meaning ‘skill as a result of learning or practise’. Therefor I turned to Vermeer and tried my skills on this old master. I took a newer and even greater model though: Scarlett Johansson, posing in the movie ‘the Girl with the Pearl Earring’.
