The bright sun in the middle of the day creates a perfect blue and white seascape. Such tabular icebergs are new, that is less than 1 year old, having recently calved from the glaciers, or the ice tongues or the Ross Ice Shelf. The wave has been created by the wash from the ship. Expeditioners walking on the fast ice between the ramparts of the Drygalski Ice Tongue. The Drygalski Ice Tongue (an extension of the Davide Glacier) extends into the sea for about 80 kilometres. The Drygalski Ice Tongue forms the southern edge of Terra Nova Bay in the Ross Sea, Antarctica. Glaciers are formed when pieces of the ice tongue break off its far end due to sea and wind erosion. Much of the sea on the Northern side of the tongue is open in summer, rather than ice as the massive tongue, which rises to about 10 stories high above the water, offers a degree of protection from the worst of the weather. Adelie Procession (#4 in a Sequence) showing a group of Adelie Penguins (pygoscelis adeliae) gathering together to cross a frozen pool in the pressure ridges in the sea ice at Cape Hallett, Ross Sea, Antarctica. It was as if they thought it was open water, rather than frozen, and that the risk of a Leopard Seal may have been present. Once they did get going they hurried across, skidding and sliding as well as running. Global warming has not yet had any devastating effects on Antarctica, but the signs are there with larger and more icebergs being carved ...
