Migratory Bird Pins and Buttons

Every year shearwaters arrive in the Azores to nest and lay their only egg. It is a very dear visitor that enchants the skies of the islands.

Green-Winged Teals start to mass at Piper Spit, Burnaby Lake, Canada, as winter on the West Coast passes its halfway point. A number of North America's smallest dabbling ducks also start to engage in springtime courtship behaviors at this time. This drake was particularly vocal, and gave me a good angle of himself in the process.

Though they have a legendary reputation for being extremely feisty, the Rufous hummingbirds seem to be subdued this year, stealthily sneaking in visits to the flowers before suffering the wrath of the resident Anna's hummingbirds. This beautiful little stranger was camping out in the California Lilac, and guarding her precious stash of nectar from within this large cage-like shrub.

Verdin Snagging Insects From the Agarita by Debra Martz Many songbirds enjoy the fruits of the Agarita plant and/or the insects which the plant attracts as well and we were fortunate enough to have one in our campsite. I was able to watch this Verdin come and go from the comfort of my lawn chair at South Llano River State Park...a park located near Junction, Texas in the Hill Country. Yellow-rumped Warbler at Water Spout by Debra Martz While hiking a few trails at Goose Island State Park in south Texas, I crossed a paved road and noticed a few picnic tables...good time for a break. But the best part was when I neared those tables, I realized there was a watering and feeding station for birds. Shortly after sitting down, in flew this migratory Yellow-rumped Warbler. When I saw this as a larger image on my computer screen I felt it looked like a painting, therefore I added a dry brush painterly effect.

Break Time for Pewee by Debra Martz It was a bird watching day that for the most part included dolphins playing in the ship channel, tons of dragonflies all over and around Paradise Pond along with a healthly bunch of Red-eared Sliders...when finally, a bird!!!
