Beautiful Abbey Senanque in the early morning sun. The Abbey is located just outside of Gordes in Provence, France. The Abbey was founded in 1148 under the patronage of Alfant, bishop of Cavaillon, and Ramon Berenguer II, Count of Barcelona, Count of Provence, by Cistercian monks who came from Mazan Abbey in the Ardèche. Temporary huts housed the first community of impoverished monks. By 1152 the community already had so many members that Sénanque was able to found Chambons Abbey, in the diocese of Viviers. A refectory was added in the 17th century, when some minimal rebuilding of existing walls was undertaken, but the abbey is a remarkably untouched survival, of rare beauty and severity.

Sumela Monastery is one of the most impressive sights in the whole Black Sea region ("Karadeniz" in turkish, also known as "Pontus) region, and a great pilgrimage for all Pontic-Greeks. Nowadays is a museum. Located in the heart of the national park of Altindere valley, close to Macka town, Trabzon province, Turkey. Sumela Monastery (called by the locals "Meryemana") was for centuries, since the byzantine years and until 1922, when the exchange of populations, between Greece and Turkey took place, the most important Greek-Orthodox monastery in the whole Black Sea region. Nowadays it's a museum.

This is all that remains of the old monastery that would at one time have dominated the area that is now the town centre of Bishop's Stortford. HDR created from one RAW file processed as three DNG files in Photomatix, adjustments in CS6 with some help from Topaz Filters. Nikon D7100 with Nikkor 18-55 zoom.

Shwe Nan Daw Kyaung (Golden Place) Monastery, Mandalay, Myanmar This monastery was originally part of the Amarapura palace complex and was moved to Mandalay to become the apartment of King Mindon. When King Mindon died in 1878, his son, King Thibaw, had it dismantled and using mainly these materials, he built the present monastery. Upon its completion on 18 November 1883, he dedicated it to the Buddhist order. The whole building was once heavily gilt and adorned with glass mosaics and exquisite wood carvings. The medieval, byzantine "castletown" of Mystras, close to Sparta (or "Sparti") town, Lakonia, Peloponnese, Greece. Here you can see the church of the abandoned Perivleptos monastery. In its interior you can see some impressive frescoes. In 1261, the Latins ceded Mystras and other forts in the southeastern Peloponnese as ransom for Villehardouin, who had been captured in Pelagonia, and Michael VIII Palaeologus made the city the seat of the new Despotate of the Morea. It remained the capital of the despotate, ruled by relatives of the Byzantine emperor, although the Venetians still controlled the coast and the islands. Roussanou Monastery (Meteora, Trikala, Thessaly, Greece) is also know as Agias Varvaras Monastery. It was established (probably) around 1388 by the monks Necodemus and Benedict. Today functions as a nunnery. Open to visitors daily, except Wednesday, from 09:00-14:00 (winter) and 09:00-18:00 (summer).

Labrang Monastery in the Chinese province of Gansu houses about 2000 monks and has six colleges, each a different building with wonderful old doors decorated with colorful silk cloths.
