At the Turnaround in Seaside, Oregon, is this monument to Lewis and Clark. Apparently, this is the site of their salt cairn which they used to harvest salt in preparation for their return journey east.

In one large area of the Painted Hills (John Day Fossil National Monument; Oregon), there stood this lone tree among the giant hills. What a view to behold. All images are Copyright © 2016 Hany G. This is a reworked version of my Edinburgh's Folly shot. I have attempted to remove the people. Please tell me if you like it. The National Monument, Edinburgh, is Scotland's memorial to those who died in the Napoleonic Wars. The monument is on the top of Calton Hill, just to the east of central Edinburgh. It was designed by Charles Robert Cockerell and his collaborator William Henry Playfair and is modelled upon the Parthenon in Athens. Construction started in 1822. The monument is famous for being only partially complete. Tugu Jogja (Indonesia Travel)

This vertical design rotor was erected by the Dornier company, better known for building aeroplanes, on a windy spot near Heroldstatt on the Swabian hills in 1990 as an experiment to measure how efficient it was at producing electricity from wind power. The big advantage of the design (which originates from 1931 from the French engineer Georges Jean Marie Darreius) was that the moving parts were at ground level and therefore easy to access for maintenance. Unfortunately, it became clear that this design was less efficient than the more familiar rotor blades attached to a horizontal turbine, and as far as I know this is now the only example of the Darrieus rotor still standing in Germany. This is part of the Albert Memorial in London, which shows four parts of the world with different imagery. This is supposed to represent the Americas. What was most striking to me was the buffalo (and my mom loves buffalos; she was traveling with me at the time). So this one's for my mom, ultimately.

The Monument of Vittorio Emanuele II in the city of Rome, Italy (unfortunately covered in scafolding when I was there). When it comes to monuments, the Legislators in Rome think big. Also known as the Altare della Patria monument, it was built to honour Victor Emmanuel, the first king of a unified Italy. The monument is built of pure white marble from Botticino, Brescia, and features majestic stairways, tall Corinthian columns, fountains, a huge equestrian sculpture of Victor Emmanuel and two statues of the goddess Victoria riding on quadrigas.
