Pokhara is the second largest city of Nepal after Kathmandu. Three out of the ten highest mountains in the world — Dhaulagiri, Annapurna I and Manaslu — are within a linear distance of 50 km from the city. Due to its proximity to the Annapurna mountain range the city is also a base for trekkers undertaking the Annapurna Circuit. This majestic peak in the Himalayas is called Machapuchare, also known as “Fish Tail Mountain.” At 22,943 feet it’s considerably less tall than Mt. Everest, but this mountain is definitely in illustrious company–legendary peaks such as Annapurna (which actually has three summits) and Manaslu, both in the “8,000-meter club,” are not far away. Begnas Tal (lake) is a freshwater lake located in the south-east of the Pokhara Valley. The lake is the second largest, after Phewa lake, among the eight lakes in Pokhara Valley. Water level in the lake fluctuates seasonally due to rain, and use for irrigation. The water level is regulated through a dam constructed in 1988 on the western outlet. Some parts of the lake are used as caged fisheries. The Begnas lake area has a number of swampy areas around it, many of which have been converted to paddy fields day by day. The mountains in the distance are, of course, The Himalayas. The Newari woman will row you round the lake if you wish.

Shanti Stupa in Pokhara is the first World Peace Pagoda in Nepal and seventy-first pagoda built by Nipponzan-Myōhōji in the world. The pagoda is 115 feet tall and 344 feet in diameter. The white pagoda has two tiers for tourists and religious visitors to circumambulate. The second tier displays four statues of the Buddha presented as a souvenirs from different countries: ‘Dharmacakra Mudra’ from Japan, ‘Bodh Gaya’ from Sri Lanka, ‘Kushinagar’ from Thailand and 'Lumbini' from Nepal.
