In the Flos Duellatorum, Fiore dei Liberi wrote: "No other creature is able to look so clearly as me, the lynx / and by this I ever reckon by compass and measure. I am the tiger, I am very quick to run and turn / That the arrow in the sky cannot approach me. None bears a more ardent heart than me, a lion / And I challenge anyone to battle. I am the elephant and I have a castle for a burden / And never do I kneel down nor do I lose my true place." And now you too can bear his four animals and carry their virtues wherever you go.

Based on a Nightcap made in 1550 that is in the collection of the Cooper-Hewitt Museum, and requested by some SCA friends. From the Embroiderers Guild of Victoria: "In the iconography of the time, rainbows represent the peace brought by Queen Elizabeth I after a time of political upheaval, and the caterpillars represent this transformation." I had a lot of fun creating this little design!

Heraldry, entomology, and general nerdery collide in Valorous Beasties, a series of designs inspired by coats of arms, distinctive unit insignia, and BUGS. Periodic cicadas are known for their long periods of domancy--between 13 and 17 years--a trick that is thought to thwart would-be predators by either starving them out or overwhelming them with sheer numbers when the cicadas emerge. This crest bears the motto "tempore quaeque suo qui facit; ille sapit" or "the wise person is the one who does everything in its proper time," attributed to Ovid.
