This odd illustration shows a root vegetable (presumably a carrot) smoking a cigarette, heedlessly sauntering through some ants as they are constructing something. Theodor Severin Kittelsen is one of the most popular artists in Norway and is well-known for his nature paintings, as well as for his illustrations of fairy tales and legends, especially of trolls.
