Sigiriya (Lion Rock) is an ancient rock fortress located near the town of Dambulla in the Central Province of Sri Lanka. The name refers to a site of historical and archaeological significance that is dominated by a massive column of rock nearly 200 metres. According to the ancient Sri Lankan chronicle the Culavamsa, this site was selected by King Kasyapa (477 – 495 CE) for his new capital. He built his palace on the top of this rock and decorated its sides with colourful frescoes. On a small plateau about halfway up the side of this rock he built a gateway in the form of an enormous lion. The capital and the royal palace was abandoned after the king's death. Whilst on safari you should be lucky enough to see lots of animals- Elephant, Water Buffalo, Deer, Sambhur, Peacock and various birds. It can be a memorable adventure for you. This shot taken on jeep safari from Sigiriya village. Be very careful with booking these anywhere. Make sure you get in writing what is to be provided, for how long, how much and what happens if they fail to provide in full. Generally, the drivers are amateurs and have little knowledge of 4 wheel drive. My group were stuck for an hour in some mud. I had to advise them how to get out!
