Uptown Pins and Buttons
Description: Uptown Records was a groundbreaking American label, founded by Andre Harrell in 1986, that defined the sound of '90s hip-hop and R&B, pioneering the "New Jack Swing" genre and launching superstars like Mary J. Blige, Jodeci, and Heavy D & The Boyz, while also giving Sean "Diddy" Combs his start, creating a cultural movement alongside hit music. The label's signature style blended assertive hip-hop with smooth R&B, establishing a distinctive aesthetic and lifestyle brand that influenced music for decades.
Description: The Uptown Bar and Cafe was one of the neighborhood's most-loved restaurants. But Uptown was forced to close in 2009 to make way for new construction. The redevelopment is a financial boon for the estate of Frank Toonen, 88, who has owned the bar going back to the 1950s. Toonen isn't the guy who made it into a rock venue, though. He sold the place in 1984 to famed concert promoter Ray Colihan, aka Big Reggie, who helped turn it into a bustling music venue before he died in 1986. Frank's son, Kenny Toonen, took it over in the mid-'90s and killed live music there for several years. Business slumped, though, and bands were invited back. By all accounts, the bar has done well since then.
Description: A black background with large white text that reads "UPTOWN" in a bold, outlined font with vertical line accents. To the right is a circular emblem with white text and a white outline. The text within the circle reads "SUKGIAK THENINORR BC HEUSESTOFOMERION" around a "BC" monogram.
Description: Mother McCree's Uptown Jug Champions (MMUJC) was a band that played traditional jug band folk music using traditional musical instruments such as guitar, mandolin, and banjo, combined with homemade instruments, including washtub bass, washboard, kazoo, and, eponymously, a jug, played by blowing into it as if it were a brass instrument. MMUJC recorded a single self-titled album live at the Top of the Tangent coffee house in Palo Alto, California in July 1964.
