The rougarou, a werewolf creature of Cajun folklore, emerges from behind a cypress tree. This American cryptid wades through waters and under Spanish moss in the swamps of Louisiana. 3D Rendering. The rougarou is thought to be derived from the loup-garou, which is simply the French term for a werewolf.  The belief in these beasts was likely brought over to the New World with French settlers and is particularly associated with Catholicism:  The monster is said to prey on those who fail to follow the rules of Lent, and even are created when someone breaks those same rules seven years in a row.
