Charlotte, also known as the Chevalière d'Éon, was a French soldier, spy, diplomat, author, and noblewoman. Her gender transition was officially recognized by King Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette and later legally recognized under English law. She fought in the Seven Years War and was later employed as a diplomat helping to draft the Peace of Paris which helped to end that same war. During that time she also spied on corrupt officials and was temporarily exiled from France, though this later changed to a short banishment to a region of France. Though she dressed as a woman on and off throughout her life she officially transitioned in her late 40s with funds provided by King Louis XVI for a new wardrobe.
