John Francis Anthony "Jaco" Pastorius III (* December 1, 1951 in Norristown, Pennsylvania; † September 21, 1987 in Fort Lauderdale, Florida) was one of the most influential electric bassists in recent music history. From 1979 he also gave solo concerts with the bass only. His credo was: "I play bass as if I was playing with a human voice." In 1988, Pastorius was elected into the Jazz Hall of Fame by the readers of Down Beat as the only electric bassist.
