The lock is no 74 on the Kennet and Avon Canal and is near the centre of the picturesque market town of Hungerford in West Berkshire - very near the border with Wiltshire. The Kennet and Avon Canal, 87 miles long, was constructed between 1794 and 1810 to provide a smooth transport link between Bristol and London via Reading. It fell into disuse but was completely restored and opened in 1990.
