designed and sold by  SciencePhoto

Wright brothers Kitty Hawk glider. Test flight by US aviation pioneer Wilbur Wright (1867-1912) of the 1902 glider built and flown by the Wright brothers Orville and Wilbur on beaches near Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, USA. Wilbur is gliding down a slope on Big Kill Devil Hill. The Wrights carried out a series of glider tests from 1900 to 1902, prior to their first successful flight in a heaver-than-air machine (17 December 1903). This glider design included a rebuilt rudder. It had a length of 4.9 metres and a wingspan of 9.8 metres. Hundreds of glides took place in 1902, the longest of 190 metres took 26 seconds. Photographed on 10 October 1902.
