Aptenodytes: a genus of large penguins including the king penguin and emperor penguin. Icy columns and pediment plus two emperor penguins surround the Latin saying "Carpe aptenodytes." (The translation, "Seize the penguins," appears subtly on the frieze.) Great for any over of penguins, Latin, architecture, or winter.

The base structure of these buildings are field stone or cut stone, then covered with mortar and the cobbles set for decoration. Cobblestone homes, barns and churches are unique to central and western New York. The proliferation of these structures in the 1820’s and 1830’s was due to a unique set of circumstances. The Completion of the Erie Canal meant the many (mostly Italian) stone masons, who had built the locks, where looking for work, many of the farmers and business men in the area near the new canal were gaining great wealth, since their products could now be shipped to major market at a reasonable cost and Finally the unique geology of the area has an abundance of small round stones left from the ice age.
