While snow covered the majority of Johnson Lake and kept it hidden from view on this visit in mid-February, a small unfrozen area gave a little window into what was hiding underneath the winter wonderland!

A few last plants doing their best to fight their way out from under the early season snow at Lake Louise. This is such a gorgeous time of year -- the lake, while not its signature bright blue, was still a lovely turquoise, a colour that was brought out nicely by the white snow all along its shoreline!

The famous methane bubbles of Abraham Lake. Every year, this man-made reservoir freezes, causing the plants on the bottom of the lake to decompose and release methane bubbles, which freeze in place in the ice. The result is a mesmerising display all across the lake.

Not far from where the gigantically-wheeled Ice Explorer bus stops on the Athabasca Glacier is this rapidly running river. Apparently, there never used to be running water on top of the glacier, but now there is so much melted ice running below the glacier that this water had nowhere else to go. It made for a gorgeous -- but sad -- sight.

In the summer months, sunrise creates a gorgeous alpenglow on the ten peaks behind Moraine Lake. It first paints the peaks in orange and then gradually sinks down the mountains as it turns pink and then white. It's an amazing sight to behold, and even though I frequent Moraine Lake for sunrise workshops, it's a scene that never gets old!

Athabasca Falls is a hugely popular summer destination, with its intense falls crashing into the gorge and leaving visitors in awe. While the falls were barely running when we visited in early March, I found the contrasts of winter just as impressive; the dark walls of the gorge against the pale blue skies above, and the deep aquamarine of the water with the white blanket of snow surrounding it. It's a place I will stop at time and again, no matter what time of year it is.

Moraine Lake is one of my most popular workshop destinations, so over the summer, I watched the sunrise nearly 20 times there. It was fascinating to see how the lake changed over that time, as well as all the different sorts of lighting that can occur at that time of the morning. I captured the light on the Ten Peaks behind the canoes at the end of my second "All-Nighter" workshop in July. It was a great place to end our long night of shooting around the park!

Even in the -20º temperatures of a March morning in Jasper, the Athabasca River was flowing freely, the ice floating in its current just obscuring the reflections of the national park's mountains beyond.

The Three Sisters standing tall over the train line at Canmore. This was the "calm" because only a few minutes before, trains were roaring past, including the CP Holiday Train, which is the train we were chasing through the Rockies that night.

A lone visitor stands on the ice of the Vermilion Lakes just after sunrise. It was a frigid March morning, but there's no reason to let -25ºC temperatures get in your way when the world around you is just beckoning to be explored like it was here!

How interesting is the colour of this stream? You could tell the water came from a glacier from how milky -- yet how blue -- it was. And that waterfall in the background? That's Takkakaw Falls, a monster of a waterfall. This photo would barely encompass the bottom quarter of it!

A number of hardy souls braving the 20º temperatures and wind gusts full of snow on the boardwalk between the Banff Gondola and Sanson's Peak. Sure, we all could have stayed inside at one of the new cafes in the gondola terminus, but with views like this - complete with trees and mountains freshly coated in snow -- there was no way I was staying inside!

What a view! After plenty of fresh snow in the days leading up to Christmas, Sulphur Mountain was looking frosted and gorgeous on Boxing Day, even if we did have to brave -20ºC temperatures and snow being whipped uphill by the wicked winds to get to this lookout! The wind was strong enough that you can even see which direction it was going from the trees in this photo.

When the conditions report at the bottom of the gondola read "extreme conditions," we took it as a bit of a challenge. Despite the wind whipping snow up the side of the mountain and trying to sand our faces off, it was worth it for views like these.

Because of a bit of a snafu with the rental car company which meant I couldn't drive our car, I didn't get to see as many lakes in the Canadian Rockies in morning light as I would have liked. Spending two mornings on the gorgeous shores of Emerald Lake made up for that though!

The Bow River doing its best to fight off the freezing effects of winter. Its shoreline was partially frozen, but the river itself -- despite having chunks of ice floating down it -- was still running strong.

The skies above Medicine Lake lighting up in cotton candy pink early on a brisk morning in October. I was lucky to have such a perfect reflection as the lake was definitely beginning to freeze!

The incredibly tall rough-and-tumble of Takakkaw Falls. It's over 300m tall and I definitely needed a wide angle to fit it all in one shot, even from this far away!

In early November, my friend and I went out to shoot sunrise on the shores of Lake Edith on a brisk, -24ºC morning. We had to keep ourselves moving so we didn't freeze on the spot, but I found this spot fascinating enough that I stayed for quite a while. Yes, there was steam rising in the distance (where the lake was still not quite frozen) and a colourful sunrise, but this natural ice sculpture is what grabbed my attention. It's amazing that something like this can form from just a small pile of sticks (especially since there was nothing inside the top part of the spiral except for ice).

I went to Morant's Curve early one afternoon looking to capture a timelapse that perhaps featured a train. 45 minutes later, no trains had passed, but in that time, this cloud crossed the entire sky -- just a single streak with hardly a cloud around it. It was truly unbelievable to watch...and very exciting because I managed to capture the entire traversal in my timelapse, which you can watch at https://vimeo.com/202296789.

The Larch Valley track, which climbs to 8,000ft above Moraine Lake and the Valley of the Ten Peaks, is one of the most popular hikes in Banff National Park in autumn. It's no wonder, since the pine trees turn to golden larches as soon as you hit 7,000ft and you're absolutely surrounded in autumn colour. What a place!

On this morning on the last day of 2016, it really did feel like the calm between the storms. Snow from the previous day had cleared, leaving us clear blue skies for sunrise; thirty minutes later, as the sun began to peek out from behind Mount Rundle, the snow clouds were beginning to set in again. On a larger scale, it was also the calm between the crazy year that was 2016 and the inevitable craziness that would follow in 2017.

What a sunrise! Just when we thought the colours had left the sky -- the clouds had already faded from pink back to a faint blue hue -- they exploded again. It was the last sunrise of 2016, and of all the sunrises I witnessed at this spot during the year, it was definitely the best.

I'm not sure if I will ever find a road I love more than the Icefields Parkway (although the Spray Lakes Rd/Smith Dorrien in the Kananaskis comes a close second). I find a new angle on the mountains every time I drive it, and fortunately in winter, you can stand in the middle of the road for quite a while before a car passes by!
