Remembering Sibley’s Department Store. Sibley, Lindsay & Curr Company, known informally as Sibley's, was a Rochester, New York-based department store chain with stores located exclusively in the state of New York. Its flagship store was at 228 East Main Street in downtown Rochester and at 1.1 million square feet it was the largest department store between New York City and Chicago. Sibley's is fondly remembered as the premier department store in upstate New York.

The indescribable joy of seeing Father Christmas, neon on lights, and artificial Christmas trees, a world seen through the eyes of a little boy, surrounded by noises, smells and sensations. Tills ringing, loud voices, a food hall redolent of cheese and ham and ground roasting coffee, escalators transporting me to an enchanted world of novelty, and then to the vinegar scented dining room where salty chips and sugary, creamy trifle would be served. Liberty, is a world famous luxury department store in Great Marlborough Street, in the West End of London, established in 1875. Known for it's close connection to art and culture, they are most famous for their bold & floral print fabrics. In 1924, this store was constructed from the timbers of two ships: HMS Impregnable, and HMS Hindustan. The frontage on Great Marlborough Street is the same length as the HMS Hindustan. The emporium was designed by Edwin Thomas Hall and his son, Edwin Stanley Hall. They designed the building at the height of the 1920s fashion for Tudor revival. The company's 841,000-square-foot Brooklyn flagship store was located at 422 Fulton Street in Downtown Brooklyn. In 2003, the Brooklyn Heights Association and the Municipal Art Society put the building on a list of 28 historic buildings in downtown Brooklyn that needed to be protected.

In a city in the centre of France I came across this beautiful old building. I was fascinated by the blue, by the faded almost metallic blue that formed the signage and shutters. By the grace of God. It seemed an odd name, filled with meaning and evoking an era before commercialization, before the street surrendered to chains and the gluttony of fast food. Around me the old city centre vibrates gently, promising old fashioned cheese shops, the glorious aroma of roasting coffee beans and the timeless peel of bells from the cathedral.A great souvenir of France, a lovely addition to any collection, and a perfect gift.

Check out this Dayton's Department Store Minneapolis Minnesota Vintage Retro design. Dayton's was a department store chain founded in Minneapolis, Minnesota in 1902 by George Draper Dayton. The 6-story department store was located on the corner of 7th Street and Nicollet Avenue. It was a twin cities institution and known for beautiful holiday displays.

Remembering Hens & Kelly Department Store in Buffalo NY. Hens and Kelly, established in 1892 by Mathias J. Hens and Patrick J. Kelly, was a chain of department stores based in Buffalo, New York. The downtown store was located at 478 Main Street at the corner of Mohawk Street. They were early adopters of S&H Green Stamps as a promotional incentive for repeat customers. This was a rewards program that provided stamps with each purchase. These stamps could be used to buy products from a catalogue at a later date.

The company's 841,000-square-foot Brooklyn flagship store was located at 422 Fulton Street in Downtown Brooklyn. Pic 'N' Save Corporation (later MacFrugals) was at one time the second-largest closeout retail chain in the United States. William Zimmerman founded Pic 'N' Save Corporation in 1950 in Culver City, California. By 1985, it operated 90 stores in California and six other U.S. states. In 1991, the company changed its name to MacFrugals. It later expanded to the Southwest and into the South, but left both markets in the late '90s. In 1997, Consolidated Stores Corporation bought out the remaining MacFrugals stores for $995 million in stock and slowly began converting them to their closeout retail store brand.

Remembering Hecht’s Department Store. Washington DC and Baltimore Maryland. Hecht's was a large chain of department stores that operated mainly in the mid-Atlantic area. The firm originated in Baltimore in 1860. And then in 1896 Hecht’s opened a store in Washington DC, which eventually moved to a grand glass and marble store at the corner of 7th and F Streets Northwest in 1925. By 2005, Hecht's had some 81 stores in Maryland, Washington DC, Virginia, North Carolina, Tennessee, Delaware, New Jersey and Pennsylvania. The family-owned business made customers a top priority and believed in a personalized shopping experience.

Frederick & Nelson was for many years known as Seattle's premier department store. Founded by Donald E. Frederick and Nels B. Nelson in 1891, they began selling used furniture during the rebuilding of Seattle after the Great Fire of 1889. The business expanded to include home delivery of goods, a tea room, and ready-to-wear men's and women's fashions, a great deal of which was very much on-trend and from upscale designers from around the world. The owners built a reputation for elegance and customer service that was beyond compare in the Seattle area at the time.
