Dunkleosteus was a 19.7 foot super-predator that used a lethal combination of suction and a wicked bite to cut through everything unlucky enough to cross it’s path, armor or no. Like many fish living today, D.terrelli most likely would swim close to unsuspecting prey and suck water into it’s mouth along with it’s victim. Instead of teeth, Dunkleosteus possessed a set of bony plates that were an extension of it’s own dermal armor. These places were self sharpening and would shear through most other armored fish with little trouble and was aided by a four-bar linkage mechanism that allowed it to open and close it’s jaws on the top and bottom at incredibly high speeds.

This is Ness Cove beach. Its a secret beach reached via a secret smuggler's tunnel from nearby Shaldon in Devon. Being secret it was naturally crowded when I visited. I was going to add the crowds, but then realised I like the painting with out them. Just two remain, at the exit of the tunnel. Painted in oil on a 16x12 inch board, I found that the Devonian sandstone paints well with a mix of crimson alizarin and chrome yellow and a little permanent mauve.

CUTE STEGOSAURUS (STEGOSAUR) DINOSAUR ILLUSTRATION. Stegosaurus (/ˌstɛɡəˈsɔːrəs/1), from Greek stegos (στέγος) which means roof and sauros (σαῦρος) which means lizard, is a genus of herbivorous thyreophoran dinosaur. Fossils of this genus date to the Late Jurassic period, where they are found in Kimmeridgian to early Tithonian aged strata, between 155 and 150 million years ago, in the western United States and Portugal. Of the species that have been classified in the upper Morrison Formation of the western US, only three are universally recognized; S. stenops, S. ungulatus and S. sulcatus. Dawlish is known for its red Devonian sandstone cliffs and the dramatic train journey that for ten minutes weaves through them as it travels from Dawlish to Teignmouth (Devon, UK). For me its a favourite spot that encapsulates that feeling of holiday, even though I've only ever been there for a day. The place has a holiday vibe, with everything relaxed and stress free. Nothing captures that more than sitting on the red sands, ice cream to hand, watching the trains trundle along through the cliffs. Painted in oil on a 20x8 inch board, I hope this gives you that feel too.

A massive armored fish from the Devonian period, happily swims through the warm shallow seas.

Teignmouth in Devon (UK) is a picturesque little seaside town that sits at the end of the Teign estuary. The rock here is classic Devonian sandstone - a red coloured stone that can be seen in the famous red sands and the cliffs (that the train weaves its way through en route from Exeter to Plymouth). Half the pub sign is missing, so I'm not sure its full name, so for now its the New 'Q'! This view of a corner of the harbour area is the first of hopefully many that I'll be painting over coming months. Painted in oil on a 16x12 inch board.
